How to Break into Project Management

I often get asked, "How did you break into project management?" Well, here's my story.

Years ago, I found myself eager to step into the dynamic world of project management. I didn't have a traditional background in the field, but I was determined to make my mark. So, I took a proactive approach.

First, I sought out opportunities within my organization where I could showcase my organizational skills and knack for leadership. Whether it was volunteering for cross-functional projects or spearheading initiatives within my team, I made sure to demonstrate my potential as a project manager.

Next, I invested in my education and obtained relevant certifications like PMP and CSM. These credentials not only equipped me with the necessary knowledge but also validated my commitment to the field.

The most crucial aspect of my journey was networking. I connected with seasoned project managers within and outside my organization, sought mentorship. Their guidance and support were invaluable as I navigated my way into the world of project management.

Today, I'm proud to say that I've carved out a fulfilling career in project management, fueled by passion, determination, and a relentless pursuit of growth. I hope these are helpful tips to those aspiring project managers out there.

Summary:

  1. Start by getting involved in projects where you can demonstrate your organizational, problem-solving and leadership skills.

  2. Consider obtaining certifications like PMP or CAPM to enhance your credentials and knowledge in project management methodologies.
